Em-Aa-Ex

Do you notice anything wrong with this previously-in-perfect-condition book? Let me first say that generally, Max is fabulous with books. He is always very careful with them, and I can't think of ANY that he has ever torn or ruined...other than the normal wear and tear...seriously. So you can imagine my surprise when I see a mysterious flap on the floor. Autie: "gasp! Max, this was not a good choice, did you rip this flap out of a book?"
Max: "yeah."
Autie: "Show me where it goes so we can fix it..."
He opens the book to this page, and I stick the flap in so I can re-tape it...whatever...and close the book when I see two more flaps hiding under the chair.
Autie: "Are you kiddin' me? Max we don't ruin our books, that makes mommy sad! Why did you do that?"
Max: "Be-cauauauauause (if you've talked to Max in any length, you know how he says that word and it's hilarious} I wanted to spell em-aa-ex...."
enough said...I'm still bugged about the book, but that was so cute. ha, just thought I'd share.

Dec 3

Max unwrapped: The Longest Christmas List Ever {love this one!} and wrote a letter to Santa...he actually did write an M, an A and an X all by himself, just not in the spot where he was supposed to...so, I held his hand to write Santa and Max, but you can see the M with a million bumps int he middle of the page in purple...the A is hidden behind the envelope {sorry about it} and the X is in blue right above the real X. Good job writing, bub.

I transcribed exactly what he said he wanted, including the 'thank you'. I enjoy that. But I think that he got the doggy from the book, because that is what the little boy in the book wanted. ha! Hopefully he'll be happy when Santa drops his presents off!

Dec 1 & 2

Dec 1:
we read: Mickey Mouse goes Christmas Shopping
(heehee, Jeff's old school book, it was actually really cute)! and met our friends Melody and Corban to watch the parade at Disneyland...
{umm, they saved us awesome seats!!!}
Max was enthralled...and really sat on the curb and watched the whole thing...we didn't ride any rides...we went to watch the parade, and that's it...crazy, but so fun!I liked the gingerbread men...they all had completely flat heads and bodies...like they had been laying on a cookie sheet... It was such an awesome parade, gave me goose bumps, and all the princesses and their boyfriends were in it...sooo fun!Dec 2:
we read Humphrey's First Christmas... we got out our 'discovering michael' nativity and made sure we put a blanket on Jesus, just like Humphrey did...that book is Daaaaaaarling, if you haven't read it...

Dear Ivy, are you serious with that?

you're crackin' me up...seriously

24 Christmas Books

My sister Brandy gave me this crazy fun idea...and then the Crafty Crow made it even more crazy fun...Here's what we are doing...
I wrapped 24 Christmas Books...(the 24th one being the Bible)
Each day until Christmas, Max {& ives}will unwrap a Christmas book. We will read it together and then do an activity that sort of goes along with the book. {sort of}
Some of our activities are simple, some are crafty, some are silly, some barely tie in...but they are Christmas activities, just the same! Max was totally diggin' our Thanksgiving Countdown, so I KNOW he will love this, especially since it involves unwrapping a present!
Stay tuned, and perhaps I'll show you what we read and what we did...[knowing me, you know this will happen!]

Just in time...

My friend, Tara invited me to make the Pottery Barn Kids Advent Calendar with her while I was in Arizona for Thanksgiving.
Of course I said yes!
So, just in time for December 1st, and our countdown for Christmas, here is my finished product...not perfect in any way, but it'll do!
lots of cutting and stitching, but a really fun project! Thanks for the invite, Tara!

aRiZonA

Our Thanksgiving trip to AZ was too short, as always, and we couldn't cram enough time in with our friends and family that live there! I hate that part!
But, here are some things we DID do...
Fished in Grandma's pool...it's good for something in the winter, right? no, there were no real fish in there, but Max is really good at pretending. cute, huh? I got to have a girls day, so Ivy and I drove to Maricopa to play Girls that are left down there. I miss my days in Maricopa, can I tell you?!? So, while we were there, Ivy met Navy...my friend Amy's little sweetie,
and we made a disastrous mess of Tara's house...sorry, Tara! The three girls were trying to work on about 30 projects at once, bouncing back and forth from one to another, passing babies from here to there, juggling naps and lunch and and and...We got a lot done, including...more chalkboards, knock-off pottery barn advent calendars and refashioning shirts...and then schemed on more projects! Here's a picture of a tiny piece of the mess...note the sonic drinks that are sure to accompany us anywhere!

thursday, of course was turkey day...not much else to say about that...so fun to be with family! we played with cousins to our hearts content...but still, the kids didnt' want to leave. Ivy loved all the attention Lexi gave her! Friday, Jeff and I made 47 marshmallow shooters from start to finish for some boutiques that Jeff's mom has coming up. Holy they are so fun...if you want to order some from her for Christmas, they are CHEAP! $6.25 for the gun, a bag of marshmallows and some safety goggles...all done up in a pretty package. Let me know and I'll get you in contact with her. Jeff also made some garden boxes for his mom that turned out great so she can expand her garden. He worked so hard and did an awesome job. Problem is...now I know what he can do and the honeydo's will never end...{insert evil laugh}
We also got to have dinner and Bahama Bucks with our good friends the Cole's...we LOVE to be with their cute family...we miss you!
We are Thankful for ALL of our blessings, and especially that we were able to spend time with family this week.

Thanksgiving

We had such a nice day yesterday with Jeff's family! Hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving! I had a fun day of cooking with Jeff''s mom. We went out to Jeff's brother's house for the festivities...they have an awesome house, with a gajillion things to do, inside and out. This was the first holiday that we've spent that Max just played...he didn't need us at all. He went off with his cousins...all of which are older than him and totally wore himself out. He was smiling the WHOLE time! Here's my little Bubba with the real Bubba: {max and cameron} My most favorite Thanksgiving side dish...Yams and Apples. It just wouldn't be Thanksgiving to me without it. Yum! I have to make it every year, and the Mousser's have to endure it every year...but Kaite ate it, and liked it! woo hoo, I have won at least one over!
This is how I roll...My other contribution was rolls...Go big or go home, I guess! The feast: We got this idea from the Briscoe's in our ward...I sent a letter out to each family, with feathers for each family member to write what they're most thankful for. Then, after dinner, we made a family Thankful Turkey. Thanks for the idea, Michele!
After more playing, we came home to Ivy and Max's first tubby together! we can't do this at home yet because of the shower door, but it was definitely a faster way to give a bath!
We're so busy here, stay tuned for more adventures in AZ

My Grandmas

Ivy got to meet one of her Great-Grandmas this week for the first time! This is Grandma Buys...my mom's mom. Now she's known as BooBoo. We are so lucky that BooBoo's sister, Bette lives just down the street from us, so WE get a visit from her once a year.
When we lived in Arizona, Max and I liked to go visit BooBoo and sit in the rocks in her front yard and play. Max loves her, and picked up talking her ear off like they had never been apart. She's such a fun grandma, we love you, BooBoo!
After we hung out with BooBoo yesterday, I was making a flannel board story for thanksgiving, that my Grandma Ellsworth sent to me...and I got to thinking how LUCKY I am to have both of my Grandma's still, and what amazing people they are. We've got to get to Utah so that Great Grandma E can sing 'Zelda' for little ivy elle! I truly am thankful for my Grandmas.

The Grand Pies Winner is...

Betty Crocker, herself! Crap! I have to try really hard to make sure my pie is up to Betty's standards. wooo, doggy, Kristy! Call me when you see the news. get excited, I hope you like pumpkin chiffon!

GIVE said the little stream

Everybody is doing giveaways lately, and since I have been a winner, and fully intend on being a repeat winner someday, I thought I'd pay it forward. I don't do any fabulous amazing things like Kim does, but one of these days, I'm going to be thankful for pie.
I've decided that I want to make one of my mom's Pumpkin Chiffon pies{I'm licking my lips just thinking of it}, so that's what I'll be giving away. Here's the catch: there is no deadline, because I have no idea when Max is going to pull the "I'm thankful for pie" slip of paper out of our Thanksgiving Thankful Jar. If you want to enter to win, then you better enter now (it could be tomorrow).
I'm not going to make anyone follow my blog...it's mostly just for me and my family that lives far away anyways, soooo, to enter to win...just leave me a comment.
On the day that we pull the magic pie slip from the jar, Max will draw a name from a diamondbacks hat... and the winner will get a drive-pie shooting. Get excited, I love this pie!
ps...you must live in Orange County to win...:(
addendum: okok...if you live in Maricopa county...or just plain old Maricopa, for that matter and we pull the slip while we are IN Arizona...then you can win, too!
pps...if we pull the slip while we are in AZ for turkey day...I'll make it when we get back.
Now show me the love!

Color Hunt

A few days ago, we were thankful for our hands, and we used them to paint an empty egg carton with the intention of going on a color hunt later that day. As a side note, Max had a really fun time doing it and now keeps asking me to do 'activities' because apparently I asked him if he wanted to do an activity. now I have to think of awesome things to do all the time...dang it! but so cute. Anyways, we didn't end up having time to go on a color hunt that day...time has been flying lately! But today, we are thankful for the seasons, and we were supposed to go for a nature walk and enjoy the colors around us...well, how perfect was that! So, today we went on our color hunt and this is what we found. Black and blue were the hardest... Max kept hollering: 'I see somethin' yellow!' great little 'activity' for us.
pink: petals, blue: painter's tape on a piece of garbage, purple: petals, gray: rocks, yellow: caution tape and dandelions (not sure if the caution tape was from Halloween, or a real crime scene...remind me not to walk down that street again). black: a piece of rubber...random, white: seashell and petals, brown: bark and leaves, orange: bird of paradise top notch and changing leaf, red: flowers, green: leaves, grass, turquoise: garbage from a lollipop and some weird rubber washer thingy.

I had to include this picture from our color hunt...Ivy had a dandy old time. I was trying to get Maxer to look at me and show me his treasures, but couldn't...then I look over at Ivy, who's playing with her favorite hippo {which by the way, she thinks is part of a boob and enjoys just having it's foot in her mouth...this simple fact cracks Jeff up on a regular basis...no, really cracks him up...anyways} and she was just sitting there giggling away...she's so fun!

Thankful 4...

I found this idea in family fun magazine...it's my favorite magazine, by the way. Anyways, I had my friend, Jen cut out 26 #4's for me with her cricut. They are my Thankful Fours. Each day leading to Thanksgiving, I lieu of my traditional "thankful list" I will be writing something that I'm thankful for on the back of a four and hanging it on my scary tree gone thankful tree. I'll take a picture when my tree has lots of autumnal leaves/fours on it. I think it's so fun. It's my thankful for... tree. Do it, so fun!

Giveaway!

I won a give away today from my one of my go-to blogs! We won the new Ice Age DVD...and I'm so excited! I figured that today must be my lucky day, so I'm entering another.
One of my good friends, Kim, is doing a giveaway on her blog. She took our family pictures last year, did our Christmas cards, did my baby shower announcements, Ivy's birth announcements AND taking our family pictures tomorrow! I can't wait. She is really amazing.
Go check out her stuff, and enter the giveaway, too!
Pick me, Kim!

{exactly what I did}

OK, this is the 'tutorial' for the Thankful Banner that I put up yesterday. I hesitate to call it a tutorial, and would prefer to call it "exactly what I did" instead, because the first would indicate that I'm all professional...ha!
So, I don' t know how else to do this...I don't know how to make a PDF pattern from my little pieces of computer paper with a drawing on it..so I scanned my patterns, and I will tell you exactly what I did...and if you still don't get it, then just come over!
This is the inspirations: pottery barn kids catalogue from Sept...
I think their's says Give Thanks, but i did what I wanted!
Ingredients:
1 yard of Dark Brown Felt (you'll be totally safe with a yard...) I bought enough for a few people to make it, so I can't tell you exactly what I bought...see non-professional!
1/4 yard of tan felt
Felt sheets in autumnal colors: I chose:
3 crimson
2 gold
2 green
1 orange
embroidery floss in autumnal colors, I used: red, orange, gold and green, also need tan
gold and dark brown thread
sewing machine, scissors, rotary cutter, etc
Cut 8-10" x 14" pieces of dark brown felt
Cut each of the following letters from the tan felt (ha, some are backwards...I'm blonde!)
Cut 3 maple leaves...1 crimson, 2 green
cut 3 oak leaves: 1 gold, 2 crimson
cut 2 regular leaves, 1 orange, 1 gold
(or do it random however you want)

After all was cut, I hand-stiched the veins into each leaf using the running stitch (you know, up down up down) as shown in the picture below. I used random colors of embroidery floss...meaning I didn't match it to the color of the leaf, and I used 3 strands of floss. (cut a length of floss and seperate the 6 strands it is composed of into 2 groups of three)
After all the leaves were sufficiently vascularized, I broke out the sewing machine and using a mustard-y gold thread sewed around the perimeter of each leaf to attach it to each piece of the dark brown felt. Don't look too close...I'm not that good.
Position each leaf at the bottom of each 10 x 14 sheet and make sure your leaves are all skiddlywompus and facing different directions! Next, hand-stitch each letter onto each leaf/backing combination, again using the running stitch, and 3 strands of floss. I used tan colored floss. Pin the letters down like crazy so they don't bubble up!
Almost done...aren't you thankful?
I folded down the top edge of each dark brown piece an inch and sewed it down as close to the edge as I could...use dark brown thread, and no one will see you lines.
I got some rope from Home Depot...called sisal rope (1/4"). I got 50 feet for like $5...and have had plenty to make 3 banners... probably could make 3 more.
I threaded the rope through the hem using a shish-ka-bob poker...and painters tape.
Tied loopy knots at the end and strung it along my wall...
that's it. tell me if I left something drastically important out!

Thanksgiving Thankful Jar

How'd we beat Ucreate, Brand?
A few weeks ago, my sister sent me this idea. I've been so excited to do it! Then today, I saw that kari from Ucreate, one of my favorite blogs, posted it as well... This is our Jar, each day, we will choose a paper from inside. Each paper has something that we're thankful for, and an activity to do...
today we were thankful for our Grandparents and we called each of them to tell them so.
so fun!
if anyone can't find the link, I'd be happy to email them the file to print out for themselves!
